Samsung Wrist Watch Phone to be Released in Europe in Q4/2003

Samsung Wrist Watch Phone Samsung Electronics showcased the worlds first GSM/GPRS wrist watch style mobile phone at the CeBIT fair in Hannover, Germany. Shipping is planned to start some time during the fourth quarter this year.

Despite being a first-generation product, Samsung's new Dick Tracy-style watch offers a range of advanced features.

Dual-band GSM (900/1800 MHz)

GPRS class 10

One and a half hours of continuous talk time and 80 hours of stand-by time

Voice activated dialling

Built-in phone book

40 different polyphonic ring tones

WAP 1.2 browser and email client

Support for SMS and MMS

Bluetooth

Speakerphone capabilities

8 bit color OLED display

37.8 x 64 x 17.7 mm

Weighs only 80 grams

Unfortunately, it is still unknown whether the Bluetooth support also includes a DUN Profile, but it would be fair to assume that if it did, the watch phone would quickly become very popular among owners of Bluetooth-enabled PDAs for GSM or GPRS connectivity.

Users will interface with the watch phone through its 8-bit (256 colours) OLED (organic light emitting display) display with a resolution of 96 x 64 pixels which can be personalized by wallpapers. Of course the watch display the time when the user is not engaged in other activities.
